Session: "Kotlin - The New Prince in The Kingdom of Java (...and some other distant lands)" by Ciprian Popa
Category: Programming
Kotlin started like a secret internal project at JetBrains (creators of Intellij IDEA family of very productive IDEs) that were unsatisfied with all the historically accumulated Java limitations. Then Kotlin was peaking some steam supporting Android development and suddenly everybody started to be interested into it, Now Google advertise Kotlin like the preferred programming language for Android. Other companies like Pivotal/Spring, Gradle, Pinterest, AirBnb, are considering it for backend, scripting and cross-platform (Android, iOS) capabilities due to Kotlin abilities to provide concise code, nice DSLs, powerful scripting features, amazing reactive and async support using coroutines and the most interesting one the JavaScript & Native compilers. If you are curious on why Kotlin might be the best investment into your programming tool belt, just join our talk.

Ciprian Popa is a Polyglot Senior Software Developer & Consultant @Jaguard with ~25 year of professional software development having the chance to "taste" various programming languages, frameworks, technologies starting with the Sinclair Spectrum/Z80 Basic & ASM then elevating to the good old time Borland "one-floppy IDE/tools" like Turbo Pascal, Turbo C/C++, TASM, Paradox, then jumping into big visual-IDEs league with Delphi, C++Builder, JBuilder and Visual Basic + (pseudo) Visual C++ then stabilizing into JVM (Java, Scala, Groovy, Clojure and more recently Kotlin) and JavaScript (NodeJS, ES5/6, Typescript, ClojureScript, hybrid/Cordova) lands. Not to be bored, he also entertained DevOps CI/CD (Jenkins, Nexus, Docker), test automation and IoT (BLE, Raspi, Arduino) tasks. Currently he is heavily evangelizing Kotlin to everybody for some reasons that the interested ones might discover during the meetup/talk.
